The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a armed takeover in last fall and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His child, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of Bolsonaro's transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will have a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be allowed to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
