Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had allowed a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion holding it together in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, only for him admitted that the club had not mentioned the transfer ban they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Speculation that he could resign were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic in their performances as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other first five games, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it's been difficult to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

The Youngster's Surprising Comeback

At least one man kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this year. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to stay there for another season. The registration embargo forced a rethink. They were unable to thin their squad without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was persistently working to work out the nature of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
