European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
