Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together exists a intense examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the kind of problems that come with most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
